Compare cities in SC side by side

Pick up to three cities: safety, rent, wages, schools and health.

The table shows the numbers side by side. In each row, among the cities you picked, the lowest value is marked (when less is better, as with homicides and rent) or the highest (when more is better, as with wages and IDEB). The bars help you see the difference.

The data covers the 14 cities in SC with more than 100,000 residents. Tubarão and Camboriú have no rent data from a reliable source. Rent and sale prices come from listings (asking price, not contract price); the “average” is the median of the listings.

An index with your own weights

Build your own index: change the weights

This is one way to compare, not a recommendation. The pre-filled weights are just a starting point. If schools matter more to you than wages, for example, change the numbers: the table of the 14 cities updates instantly.

Each city has a score from 0 to 10 on each criterion (safety: homicide rate per 100,000 residents; the lower it is, the higher the score; rent: average advertised rent per m²; the lower it is, the higher the score; wages: average formal-sector wage; schools: average IDEB score of public schools, grades 1–5 and grades 6–9; sanitation: residents connected to the sewer system; health: infant mortality; the lower it is, the higher the score). The index is the weighted average of these scores using the weights you choose. A weight of 0 removes the criterion from the calculation.

Scores from 0 to 10: calculated by the site (on each criterion, the best value among the 14 gets 10 and the worst gets 0). Tubarão and Camboriú have no rent data from a reliable source: on the rent criterion, they were given the middle value of the other 12 cities.
