Where it is and what the city is like
Blumenau is in the Itajaí Valley (Vale do Itajaí), crossed by the Itajaí-Açu River and surrounded by hills. It covers 518.6 km². It had 361,261 residents in the 2022 Census, and IBGE (Brazil's national statistics agency) estimates 390,371 in 2026.

Water and sewer
Water is supplied by SAMAE, the municipal water authority. In 2026 the rate rose 6.834%, and the residential tier up to 10 m³ went to US$ 9.33 (R$ 47.43). Above that, each m³ from 11 to 30 costs US$ 1.70 (R$ 8.63). There is a social rate, with a lower price, for low-income families.
Sewer is run by a private concessionaire, BRK, and billed separately where there is a network. In September 2025, the regulatory agency (Agir) opened a new review of the sewer rate: check the current amount before doing the math.

Floods, landslides and Civil Defense
Floods are part of Blumenau's history. The Civil Defense's official table lists 102 floods of the Itajaí-Açu River since 1852. The most recent was on May 19, 2024, with the river at 8.67 m. That does not mean the whole city floods: each street starts to flood at a different river level.

The 2008 disaster
In November 2008, almost three months of rain ended in the worst natural disaster in Santa Catarina's history: officially, 135 dead and 78,000 people made homeless or displaced in the state, with the Itajaí Valley as the hardest-hit region. Besides the river flood, which reached 11.52 m in Blumenau, there were flash floods and landslides on the hillsides. In 2011 the river rose higher (12.60 m), but the damage was smaller and there were no deaths.

- Street flood level. In the Civil Defense flood-level table, look up the street. It shows at what river level, in meters, the street starts to flood. Example: if the street floods at 10 m, it would have been hit in 8 of the 20 floods from 2000 to today.
- Landslides. On hillsides, the risk is different. See the map of landslide risk areas.
- Street flooding from heavy rain. Streets far from the river can also flood in heavy rain: see the map of susceptibility to street flooding.
