From financing homes in Florida to a fresh start in Santa Catarina

I started in real estate in 1995, as a broker. Two years later, in March 1997, I packed my bags and went to the United States to try my luck, like so many Brazilians.

It wasn't easy: another language, other rules, starting over from scratch. But that's where I learned the side of real estate almost nobody sees. From 2001 to 2007 I worked, licensed, as a mortgage broker at R T Funding Corp. in Boca Raton, Florida. I structured home financing and helped many families in the Brazilian community buy their first home in the United States. That's where I understood that a good purchase starts with the numbers: income, monthly payment, cost of living and risk.

In November 2007 I went back to Brazil to raise a family. My two children became my greatest reason, the reason I never stop striving. Not everything worked out: I went broke more than once and had to start over from scratch. That's how I learned to reinvent myself, including online, where I built YouTube channels with more than 100,000 subscribers (there are two plaques on the wall to remind me that you can start over as many times as it takes) and helped a lot of people take their first steps.

Now, past 50, I've chosen Santa Catarina for the next chapter. And I did what I learned to do: before deciding, I went after the numbers on safety, rent, wages, schools and health, city by city.

This site is the result. I've put it all together here, with a source and date for every number, so you don't have to start from scratch the way I did.

How we work

• We only publish numbers with a public source and a date. When the source is weak, we say so.
• Anything without reliable data is marked "under construction".
• Nobody pays to be featured here. "Marcelo's Table" will only include places where he has actually eaten.
